A life-changing international lesson in STEM

In 2014 Travel Places was appointed to manage F1 in Schools World Finals – an international STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) competition in Abu Dhabi, UAE. The event brings to life lessons from the classroom and is structured around the same processes that Formula One™ teams follow to get a car on track.

The challenge:

The competition in Abu Dhabi involved 52 teams from 24 countries who had qualified after being selected from more than 20 million pupils through national contests. We not only transported 398 people to the venue in Abu Dhabi but also sourced and booked 1,487 nights of accommodation over 10 days as well as organising an extensive itinerary of excursions and entertainment for the students during their stay.

The event took place at Ferrari World from 16th – 18th November, just days ahead of the 2014 Formula One™ Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. The timing of the events allowed the pupils to experience all the excitement around the competition and Abu Dhabi Grand Prix at once but also threw-up a few logistical challenges along the way. Our team were faced with the challenge of sourcing suitable accommodation during a time of peak demand in a relatively small city, within a short space of time.

What we did:

With a management team of 10 plus 13 in-country coordinators, we planned the event meticulously and were on-hand to assist both before and during the competition. Our in-country specialists gave us invaluable local insight and knowledge while our management team offered years of experience in professional F1 competitions to ensure the whole experience went smoothly.

And it wasn’t just the competitors we looked after – with 20 international judges, numerous support staff and multiple sponsors, we arranged receptions, networking events and an after-party to mark the close of the competition.

The result:

As our professional sports team were already managing the travel plans of the majority of F1 professionals, both the schools and professional sports teams could co-ordinate and share their knowledge, securing advantageous rates for both events. And as our business spans both sports and educational travel, we were able to take advantage of our professional links with the world of F1 racing and secure a once-in-a-lifetime F1 Grand Prix pit lane walk for students.

And it wasn’t just the educational side of the trip we catered for – we arranged for students to have cultural excursions to the Sheikh Zayed mosque, visit Ferrari World and YAS Waterworld to help the students experience much more of the region.

What the client said:

“Travel Places staff have provided a comprehensive service throughout our event planning and delivery process. Your knowledge of the travel and accommodation sectors is second-to-none. This expertise is so valuable when we have many hundreds of young people and their minders undertaking international travel, many for the first time.”
